Layered Window Treatments- This video and blog post are showing Hunter Douglas Duette PowerView shades that are mounted behind shades that were already in the windows. This is pretty unusual. Typically, we would do something like a Duette DuoLite shade if we wanted to give them light filtering and room darkening in one package. So, I will give you some feedback as to how the client came to this decision.
Choosing Layered Window Treatments
When you are choosing layered window treatments it is all about the function you are looking to tackle. This client already had light filtering window shades. They were looking to block the morning sun from hitting their TV screen. Part of the issue we ran into was that they wanted to have light filtering and room darkening or blackout fabrics. That was the technical issue.
With Hunter Douglas, they offer their DuoLite product with the room darkening option, but only if the other fabric is a sheer. This client had no desire to have a sheer fabric as part of the layered window treatments. So, the circumstances allowed us to do this window with a twist that we aren’t typically able to do. We put the room darkening fabric behind the existing shades.
As I mentioned in the video, it is very important that you know the technical details of the product you are putting in. In this case we have 3 separate products in one window. Two belong to one shade, but that is a lot of depth. They were two shades and one Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery Pack. If we didn’t have about 6” of depth, we probably would have taken a different route for these layered window treatments.

Well, maybe not mandatory, but based on a few factors, it was the right choice. First, the shades are behind furniture and not easy to reach. Second, The front shades would have to be lifted in order to access the rear shades. And, Third, this client would have frustration fighting past the furniture and with the wasted time trying to operate the manual shades. Therefore, we didn’t hesitate on the addition of the PowerView automation system.
There are myriads of options when it comes to how to deal with layered window treatments, but for this client it was the right choice. I can assure you that your solution will be dramatically or minimally different from this client, but the smile on your face will be the same. Thanks for reading our blog!
