What is DuoLite?

If we break it down, it makes sense. Duo = Two. Lite = Levels of visibility or light transmission. OK, we won’t make this technical. It is basically two shades that are combined to make it possible for multiple functional needs in one set of shadings. Please watch the DuoLite video and then let’s discuss it a bit.

So, here is how it works. A Cellular DuoLite shade has three rails.

1. Top Rail. This is the rail that attaches to the top of the window and to the top of the shade that reaches the top most part of the window covering. It is stationary once it is installed. It will never move.
2. Bottom Rail. This is the bar that is attached to the bottom of the two fabric layers. It moves from the bottom of the window to the bottom of the stack of shadings as it moves to the very top of the window.
3. Middle Rail. This is the rail that controls the flexibility of the window treatment. We will come back to this rail.

A Cellular DuoLite Shade has Two Sets of Fabric. Typically it is:

1. Room Darkening Fabric. This layer allows for the darkening of the room for sleep or media purposes.
2. Sheer or Translucent Fabric. This allows for light to come into the room while maintaining the selected privacy level you’ve determined.

Technical Useage of DuoLite

How is it typically used? For example, at night or when you want the room to be dark you will lower the bottom rail to the very bottom of the window. Then you will have a completely dark room. So, in the morning, you now decide you want privacy but you need natural light. At that point, you lower the middle rail. By doing so, you can allow a sheer view to the outside or just some nice natural light that flows through the less opaque fabric.

The most common question that I get on DuoLite construction is whether you can completely open up the window. The answer is YES. All you have to do it raise the bottom rail to the top of the window. Very simple and effective.

Mechanisms For DuoLite

The video shows the LiteRise mechanism for DuoLite, which is the cordless method of adjusting the shadings. There are other ways to perform the raising and lowering tasks.

1. LiteRise- As shown, this is a tension operated manual lift system that has no external cording. There are attractive handles attached to the rails for simple operation. If you can reach the windows or are willing to use a handle for operation, this is a great choice.
2. PowerView- This is the Hunter Douglas proprietary Motorization or Automation system. The shades are run by battery operation, but you have the option of hard-wiring or plugging them in if this is preferable. They can be operated by remote control or be programmed for voice control or timed automation or by scene groupings. Contact us if you need more answers about PowerView.
3. UltraGlide- This is a system of retractable cords/wands which will be on both the left and right sides of the DuoLite cellular shades. They lower themselves with a click of the attached wand. By a slight adjustment in the location of the top of the wand, you can then pull down the cord which raises the attached rail. Then the cord retracts to its original position which is ready for another pull if necessary.
4. EasyRise- This is a continuous cord mechanism which is like a chain on a bicycle. When you pull the cord, which is attached to the side of the window, the shade adjusts up and down as preferred. There will be a cord on both sides of the window. One will operate the bottom rail and one will control the middle rail.

Pricing For DuoLite

I’ve saved the best for last when it comes to the Hunter Douglas DuoLite. Due to the fact that there are so many hybrid types of window treatments on the market now, Hunter Douglas has lowered their pricing. Whereas, they used to charge you full price for both of the shades in one window, they now have a set surcharge. It only costs a retail price of $205.00, plus the cost of the more expensive fabric, to have two individual materials in your window.

Caveat of DuoLite

Because the DuoLite is two complete shades on one set of operating systems, there is a concern. Weight can be an issue. Some of the mechanisms we mentioned above have weight limitations, which translates to size restrictions. So, before you assume you can do a DuoLite shade on your windows, make sure you consult with a professional to set your expectations. We are happy to help our clientele to go through this process.
