Can I Use Shades on Patio Doors?
The rule of thumb is that for windows we use horizontal type window treatments. For patio doors we typically use vertical type applications. This would include vertical blinds, curtains, draperies, sheer shadings in the vertical style or vertical honeycomb shades. But a rule of thumb is just one of five fingers. So, you have other options.
In the case of this client, they rarely use the slider where they wanted their shades installed. Because of this, and the fact that they wanted the adjustability of the Hunter Douglas Silhouette with DuoLite, they chose to install horizontal shades on patio doors. Due to the nature of sliders, or doors, there are usually issues that have to be dealt with. The attached YouTube video shows how we dealt with them for this Reno client.
Dangers Associated with Sliders
The video showed two major issues that we were able to deal with. First was the baseboard trim. Most of the homes in the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas have baseboard. If we do an installation of shades on patio doors, we have to make sure that the bottom rail will pass the moulding at the bottom of the window. Because the bottom rail was too wide for the window if the baseboard stayed on, the client removed the inside piece and will paint the wall to mimic the trim. This will allow the shade to move up and down freely.
Another issue that arises is the projection of the handle. Most patio door handles project about two inches or so into the space where the shade will drop. Due to this, the client removed the handle all together. This choice was made specifically by the homeowner. My suggestion was to purchase a low-profile handle, but the client decided what was best for their cirucumstances. By removing the handle, the client is able to install a shade on patio doors without any interference.
I have just touched on how this client was able to put a motorized horizontal shade on a slider door. There were definitely other considerations as well. The point is that almost any configuration can be done. It depends completely on the consultation and the needs of the individual client.
