Cellular Shades in a Roman Shade Body
If you are looking at doing cellular shades for your home, you have seen quite a few options. The biggest complaint I have heard over the years is that cellular shades tend to be a little to sleek for some peoples’ tastes. They are looking for the insulative value of honeycomb type shades, but with more style.
Enter the Solera Shades, by Hunter Douglas. They realized that there is a niche there that needed to be covered. It is a pretty perfect hybrid shade, between a traditional roman shade and a cellular shade. The pleat size is in between the two other products. Please watch the video, and after I will add a few more points on the topic.
Cellular Shades- Insulation and Stacking
Most people select honeycomb shades for two primary reasons.
- Insulation- These shades are like an extra layer of your home’s insulation, exactly where you need it; on your windows.
- Stacking Height- Most cellular shades will stack at the top of the window from about 2 1/2” to 5”, depending on the height of your window. A typical roman shade will stack from about 10” to 14”.
These Solera Shades, by Hunter Douglas, provide insulation levels on par with basic cellular shades and provide stacking close to 6”. This is closer to the honeycomb shades and far less than a typical roman shade.
Takeaways
Which is the right choice for your home? The traditional roman shade, the cellular shade or the new Solera Shade? It all depends on you and your needs. If cost is your primary consideration, then go with the honeycomb shades. If custom fabrics are to your liking then have custom roman shades made. But if you are right in the middle on this decision, then take a look at the Solera and see if it is a good fit for you.
