Hunter Douglas Motorized Shutters are a new addition to the fold for the Reno and Tahoe window treatment market. Motorized shutters are not new. Companies like Norman Shutters, (Norman Window Fashions) have been making their version for many years.
The biggest differences between the Hunter Douglas motorized shutters and the Norman Product are these:
- Remote Control- The Hunter Douglas PowerView remote works across all its like-named products. You can use one remote and one central Hub to control all the blinds, shades or shutters in the home. The Norman remote is exclusive to their shutters. If you want to control shades with their remote system, you will need a completely different type of remote control.
- Manual Control- The new motorized shutters from Hunter Douglas allow for manual operation of the louvers without damage. The Norman version is Remote ONLY unless the switch on the back of the panel is adjusted to the manual setting. You can damage the internal mechanism if this ignored.
- Coupled vs. Uncoupled- Whereas the Norman shutters require one motor per set of louvers, the Hunter Douglas Palm Beach shutters with PowerView offer Coupler technology. This means that with the coupler, you can control two side by side panels with one motor. This is done through the side of the panels where they come together.
Those are the major differences, but this is not saying that one product is better for you than the other. We aren’t really able to tell you which is best for you until we see what your particular circumstances are. One thing that immediately comes to my mind is whether the Palm Beach shutter from Hunter Douglas is the right fit for you. Hunter Douglas has only released the PowerView motors in this one type of vinyl shutter, whereas the Norman version goes across all their lines, including the ones with real wood and stains. Which one is best for your needs needs to be determined.
