Cellular shades or Honeycomb shades are a very popular window treatment in the Reno or Lake Tahoe area. When choosing the right shade, you need to take into consideration various things. For example with Hunter Douglas Duette shades, you need to think about these:
- Style of Fabric- This includes textures and weaves
- Size of Pleat- These range from 3/8″ to 1 1/2″
- Opacity- You can get sheer to opaque
- Operating System- Corded, Cordless, Motorized, etc.
We will focus on the style of the fabric and opacity in this blog post. As you can see in the video, the material looks different in the sun versus the shade. This is due to the fabric being semi-opaque, or translucent. With this fabric, you will get complete privacy, but the light does filter through. It is important that you “Candle” this material prior to making your purchase.
Candling is the process of holding the fabric up to the light to see how the lumens affect it. It is best to do Candling in the window that the shades will be installed in. This way you can see how the material will be viewed under different lighting conditions. In the above video you can see how the fabric is affected under 4 scenarios.
- Direct Light
- Shadow
- Indirect Light
- No Light- Night time
Based on these factors, Kempler Design does almost all of it’s appointments during the daylight hours. We really need to see how the fabrics will interact with your room and its paint and decor before we order your window treatments. Even though we discussed cellular shades today, the same principles affect any light filtering fabric.
