Cornice Boxes

Styles of window treatments change just like clothing fashion. Cornice boxes are one of those styles of top treatments that has come back into fashion. The telling feature of cornice boxes are the very clean lines and streamlined look. Have you looked into a current furniture store lately? If so, you are probably seeing Mid-Century Modern furniture. Not over-stuffed or over-sized, but more square shaped and slick in design. Visible hardware, like the legs of chrome or square blocks of wood. No skirts or ruffles. So, things like swags are a thing of the past.

The cornice box that we did for this Sparks NV client is a stand-alone. It isn’t tied to furniture in the room…since this is a hall bathroom. But it is a good representation of a current cornice box. We selected a rectangular design to keep it simple. But we chose a striped fabric and then accented it with a contrasting welting.

There was one thing on this job that went a little differently than we planned. Originally, I designed this box to go all the way to the ceiling. But, when I showed the client what it looked like at the ceiling, she asked me to lower it a few inches. When I held it at the height she asked for, she loved it, and so we moved it down. She was very happy with the end result. When our clients are happy, we are happy too.
