Curtains, also called draperies or drapes, are a combination of many different factors. First you need to select the fabric that you will use. Then you need to select the lining material. Then you need to pick the style of hanging, or pleat style, Then you need to determine where you will hang them in relation to the window or door or wall or any other location.
Today, we will consider how the lining you select will affect the look and function of your draperies. The attached video shows the affect of “Candling” your fabric. Candling is the act of looking at your material with light coming through it from behind. This is very important as fabrics tend to look very different with light filtering through them. Take a look at the attached photos of a woven material that has light coming through it and how different it looks when the light is not coming through it.
Sometimes you want to highlight the pattern or weave of the material. If the light washes out the look of the curtain material, often the best solution is to use a blackout lining so the material looks the same under any lighting circumstances.
Linings can assist with light control, insulation and uniformity from the street-side. There are occasions where linings are not suggested as well. Lining a sheer fabric can work against the purpose of the curtain in the first place. In the Reno and Tahoe area, we always suggest lining non-sheer curtains for durability factors. The UV rays in this area are some of the worst in the world and not having a lining on your curtains or draperies can limit the longevity of your fabric.
Summary- There are many linings available for your drapes or curtains. Choose the one that will best complement your decor and your needs.
