Roman shades have been around for many years, but sometimes there are new ways of doing things that shake things up a bit. Norman Window Fashions, known for their shutters, has also been making all types of window coverings for many years. Recently, they released a roman shade that completely eliminates cords. There are no cords on the front, back or middle. Again, there are NO CORDS at all. The way they accomplished this was by utilizing flat panels of fabrics that roll onto a roller tube at the top of the shade. These are raised and lowered by means of pulling on a fabric loop mounted behind the bottom of the shade.
I encouraged Norman Window Fashions to change the white canvas loop to something more stain resistant. We will see if they take that suggestion. I feel like over the life of the roman shade, that repeated grabbing of the neutral colored fabric will cause discoloration. My suggestion would be something vinyl wrapped or maybe a beaded chain. I’m sure they will come up with something useful.
The entire back portion of the shade is one solid piece of fabric, so the overall look from the outside is very clean. I feel like this will be an effective way to stack roman shades without having any cords. If you have a very tall window, the profile might be a little strange if you are able to see the side of the shade. I would not recommend this shade for outside mounts as you will see many different layers of fabrics from front to back. It will be providing lots of insulating layers, but I’m not sure how attractive you will think the Roman Shade looks. If someone wanted to match Norman Window Fashions fabrics to make draperies, valances or bedding, we can order extra fabric and the costs are very reasonable for such beautiful materials.
