First of all, I apologize for the quality of the photo, but I didn’t have my camera handy and had to use my cell phone. But, I did want to show how you can mix different types of window coverings and drapery styles effectively. In this home, they accomplish their window coverings needs through a Hunter Douglas Silhouette shade on the small window and a pair of sheers on the bay window. Both products incorporate sheers, so they are complementary. The tops are a bit more unusual to pair, but it flows with the room. On the bay window, this customer chose to go with drapery rods which are cut to fit the size of the decorative side panels and finials on both sides of the shorter rods. Notice that the rods and finials are oversized, which make them more coordinated with the cornice boxes. Speaking of cornice boxes, the small windows have boxes mounted over the top. Here are a couple of reasons that the mixing of materials works in this room.
- The sheer material is the same color as the shadings and they are both neutral.
- The cornice material was matched to the upholstery in the room.
- The side panels are exactly the same.
It takes a bold or courageous mind to mix different styles like this, but in the end, it can work and be very individualized to your style if you push the envelope a little bit. A qualified window fashions expert makes the choices much easier.
